Maple Leaf Foods Dilemma Assignment Paper.
On August 7, 2008, officials of Toronto-based Maple Leaf Foods were notified that there was a public health inquiry into some of its products. On August 12, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) told the company that it was launching a formal investigation into some products produced at its Toronto meat plant. Maple Leaf’s distributors were told to take the questionable products off the market, but the public was not alerted to any potential problems. Maple Leaf Foods Dilemma Assignment Paper.
On Aug. 23, a Toronto Maple Leaf Foods plant was confirmed as being involved in the outbreak of the food-borne illness, caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Maple Leaf Foods voluntarily expanded its recall of products manufactured at its Bartor Road facility in Toronto, as a precautionary measure.
"From our standpoint this is the right thing to do. If there is any question in the consumers' mind about any product from that plant, then the onus is on us, and the CFIA, to act decisively and swiftly to restore consumer confidence," said Michael H. McCain, president & CEO, Maple Leaf. "Our actions are guided by putting public health first." Maple Leaf Foods Dilemma Assignment Paper.
A day later, Maple Leaf upgraded a precautionary recall of 23 of its products, issued the previous week, to all 220 packaged meats from the plant, which has been shut down. The company has estimated the recall will directly cost it at least $20 million, with further costs expected due to lost sales and advertising to rebuild its image.
The firm's CEO, Michael McCain had to decide what to say to the public about the listeria contamination. When he pondered what to say to the public about Maple Leaf’s contaminated meat products, he carefully, considered where to get advice. “Going through the crisis, there are two advisers I’ve paid attention to, he told reporters. “The first are the lawyers, and the second are the accountants. It’s not about money or legal liability – this is about our being accountable for providing consumers with safe food.”
In the meantime, the Toronto facility remains closed during “the most comprehensive sanitization possible,” McCain said, adding the process is expected to be complete by early this week. McCain called the fatal outbreak a “terrible tragedy” that has shaken confidence in Maple Leaf. Maple Leaf Foods Dilemma Assignment Paper.
